It sits on the plain of Sele,
Paestum is an archaeological resort of big importance,
the Greeks
founded it in VII century B.C. and dedicated
it to the god Neptune.
The present look
is the result of
a series
of additions and
repairs that went
from IV
cent. B.C. to the
roman age. Subsequently
the walls, lost their
strategic duty, they
received the burial
of the last inhabitants
of the place too.
Visiting Paestum
you can
admire:
THE BASILICA
It sits on part more southerner to the place,
in fact it is a temple dedicated to Hera, it was the first temple built in Paestum.
The Neptune´s temple remains the most
beautiful greek temple, the Basilica is certainly
the most beautiful italic monument.
CERES´S TEMPLE
It sits at the north limit south part of the
place, it´s divided from Basilica to
Neptune´s temple to the area of Forum,
the temple appointed Ceres but in fact it
dedicated to Athena, it understands to the discovery to some
images of the goddess, she imagined with
armours.
It was built about 500 B.C. the temple is in doric style and it was
built about a period of fifty years after
the Basilica. The monument represents the
period of transition to the temple´s
architecture the late arcadian age at the
trees of classical antiquity. It keeps an
elegant structure characterized to the balance
between the plan and the raising that we
can appreciate doing the complete tour around
the pillars of peristasis more soaring shape
than that of the Basilica. In the late antiquity
the temple was transformed into a christian
church to serve for the religiuous need of
the few inhabitants that, the place is abandoned
now, they took refuge to live here, creating
a little village, completely deleted it in
the fifties to this century, close to ancient
place of cult.
NEPTUNE´S TEMPLE
It stands on a basis of three steps and it
counts 6 pillars on its façade and 13 on
its long sides.
Further it has a wooden ceiling, the temple
had a double sloping roof covered with tiles
of marble; we don´t know the elements
of the architectural decoration concerning
with safety to this building.
Particular adjustments technical and optical
were adopted to the building the Neptune´s
temple, at the end of improved and exalted
the perspective vision: for example curvature
of the horizontal lines, observable, for
example on the floor where are based the
pillars.
This temple was carried out between 471 and
456 B.C., while more recent studies include it into
evolutionary process to the temple´s
architecture to the greek west and to Sicily
to the second quarter of the V cent. B.C.
recognized elements to the project autonomy.
SACRED WAY AND AREAS OF LIVE
You leave at your shoulders the back façade
to the temples, walking toward west you can
meet the foundations of the long wall in
blocks that surrounded the shrine and you
entered the road Sacred Way, that connected
Justice Door to the Forum.
Cover it in the direction
of the Forum you
can observe on the
left, the areas of
life
of roman epoch, organized
in long blocks,
divided into two
rows of houses separated
to a middle wall.
The plain of houses is that traditional hellenistic, with hall, impluvio and peristilio.
At the crossing one big street that develops
in to the direction of Porta Marina, you
can visit the houses, recenty restored, are
one of these blocks or to start the visit
to the monuments of the Forum.
