Certosa of San Lorenzo, Certosa which means Charterhouse.
The monastery is
one of the biggest
in the
world and has great
architectual importance
in Europe.
It became famous because of the grandeur
of the construction
51.500 square metres.
The Chaerterhouse was founded in 1306 by
Tommaso S.Severino, which then gave his construction
to the carthusian order. His origin dates
derive from the fourteenth century.
In the ´500 the transformation of big
Cloister, enrichment of vestments, altar
cloths and holy vessels.
In the ´700 the construction of the
great baroque staircase, which keeps it's
typical structure of the charterhouses.
The areas were divided
in domus inferior
and domus alta.
Domus inferior: the
brothers stayed in
this
area where they admistered
the chattles of
order.
Domus alta: this
area was exclusively
for
the carthusian fathers
which lived a religious
and ascetic life.
The Charterhouse became a place of agricultural
productions where also craftman work took
place, monks in seclusion produced and commissioned
art and culture. The carthusian fathers lived there.
The Charterhouse
visit is really to
admire:
the cloister, the
library: ceramic
floors
of Vietri, the church:
the altars refined
polychrome with inserts
of mother of pearl,
the monk cells, to
realize their way
of life,
which was study and
meditation, the orchard
of cloister; and
the enourmous kitchen
too!,
the cellars with
big barrels of wine,
the
laundries.
Also an old chapel situated in a cemetery
whit the sixteenth-century grave of the founder
of the Charterhouse, Tommaso il Sanseverino.
